US general in Afghanistan sacked for Karzai remarks

By Katherine Haddon (AFP)  KABUL — A US general in Afghanistan has been sacked after accusing leaders including President Hamid Karzai of being out of touch and ungrateful for American support, officials said. Major General Peter Fuller, who was deputy commander of NATO's mission to train and equip Afghan forces, had been dismissed after making "inappropriate public comments", the NATO-led international force said late Friday. In an interview published by news website Politico Thursday, Fuller said Afghan leaders did not fully recognise the human and financial cost borne by the United States in Afghanistan and were "isolated from reality". He also directly criticised Karzai after the president said last month that Afghanistan would support Pakistan if Islamabad ever went to war with the United States. "Why don't you just poke me in the eye with a needle?" Fuller said of Karzai's comments. "You've got to be kidding me... I'm sorry,...

LAHORE: The families of jailed Pakistani cricketers, Salman Butt and Mohammad Aamer, are not celebrating Eid-ul-Azha this year as an atmosphere of gloom prevails in their home.

LAHORE: The families of jailed Pakistani cricketers,  Salman Butt  and Mohammad Aamer, are not celebrating Eid-ul-Azha this year as an atmosphere of gloom prevails in their home. "Tell me how could we celebrate Eid at this time when our son has been sent to jail after being framed by match-fixers," father Zulfiqar Butt said. The senior Butt said that there was gloom and sadness in the household. "Everyone is missing him and we are naturally worried about him. So how can we celebrate Eid when my son is in jail in another country," he said. Zulfiqar said he was consulting lawyers and still planned to hold a press conference soon to reveal more details of the case that will show why the family believes Salman is innocent and was trapped in the  spot-fixing  scandal. Sister Khadija said everyone was missing Salman and were concerned about his welfare. "What is bothering us that since he was jailed he has not called us or spoken to us. There is no Eid f...

WASHINGTON – Thousands of activists opposed to a plan to build a 1,700-mile oil pipeline that cuts through the heart of the United States

WASHINGTON – Thousands of activists opposed to a plan to build a 1,700-mile oil pipeline that cuts through the heart of the  United States  descended on the  White House  on Sunday to ratchet up the pressure on  President Obama  to scrap the project. By Karen Bleier, AFP/Getty Images Demonstrators dressed as polar bears protest Sunday outside the White House against a planned 1,700-mile-long oil pipeline. Enlarge By Karen Bleier, AFP/Getty Images The protest of TransCanada's Keystone XL pipeline came exactly one year before the 2012 election and was designed to send a message to Obama that failure to act will lead to a drop-off in enthusiasm from the environmentalists who backed him in 2008. The project pits environmentalists against Republicans and many top labor groups — with both sides suggesting that the president will pay politically if he doesn't side with them. Backers of the project say the pipeline will create thousands of jobs and help reduce...

Imran Khan, the new Benazir Bhutto: Watch out India, US Sanjeev Srivastava

After teasing, taunting and tormenting India with his pace, guile and a gifted cricketing mind for nearly 15 years in the 1980s and 90s, Imran Khan’s return on a much bigger pitch — this time as a potential game changer in Pakistani politics — is being viewed by observers in India with a mix of curiosity and concern. India was at the receiving end at a public meeting organised last Sunday by Imran Khan’s Tehrik-e-Insaaf (PTI) in Lahore. India was not the main talking point at the rally which has been described as one of the largest gathering of people in Pakistan’s recent history. It was the Pakistani political establishment – specifically the leadership of the ruling PPP and President Zardari and the opposition PML-N and its leaders, the two Sharief brothers, that was the main target of his forceful attack. The Americans and their policy of interfering in Pakistan’s internal affairs — especially their drone attacking ways — was a close second in terms of inviting the wrath of the spe...
