Nearly four months after founder of the PostSecret blog Frank Warren launched an iPhone app to allow users to anonymously post and peruse secrets on their phones, he has shut the app down.

By Elizabeth Flock Nearly four months after founder of the PostSecret blog Frank Warren launched an iPhone app to allow users to anonymously post and peruse secrets on their phones, he has shut the app down. Warren cites the submission of “content that was not just pornographic but also gruesome and at times threatening.” (PostSecret) In a blog post, Warren explains that anonymity on the app made it “very challenging” for volunteers to “remove determined users with malicious intent,” even if they accounted for only 1 percent of the submissions. Internet trolls, or people who use an online identity for specific abusive purposes, have long stirred up trouble on message boards and discussion groups, but this may be the first time they’ve brought down an iPhone app. Controlling bullying online has long been a battleground for Web site administrators and, increasingly, for authorities offline. In September, a young man in Britain who targeted Facebook tribute pages to taunt the de...

The end of the two-day talks held between Pakistan and India showed some results, but it was apparent no drastic changes were on the agenda

ISLAMABAD: The end of the two-day talks held between Pakistan and India showed some results, but it was apparent no drastic changes were on the agenda. Both sides have agreed to extend two vital accords on the pre-notification of ballistic missile tests and reducing the risk of accidents related to nuclear weapons for another five years. The agreements were reached at the end of the expert-level talks in Islamabad, taking place to discuss nuclear and conventional confidence building measures (CBMs). The parleys, part of the peace process resumed earlier this year between the two neighbours, were held in a ‘cordial and constructive atmosphere,’ said a statement issued by the foreign office. The two sides agreed to recommend to their foreign secretaries to extend the validity of the “Agreement on Reducing the Risk from Accidents Relating to Nuclear Weapons” for another five years, it said. They also decided to renew agreement on the pre-notification of ballistic missile tests. The t...

Student designer secures investment for iPhone app Summly

Summary:  The Summly application could become the next must-have for students. Its teenage creator has secured a large investment for future development. British teenager Nick D’Aloisio, designer of the ‘Summly’ app, has secured investment with a Hong-Kong based company. Summly is an iPhone application that summarises and simplifies the content of web pages. Advertised as ‘a simple way to browse the web’, the 16-year old found inspiration for the app while studying for a history exam. D’Aloisio found the current search options available online as inefficient, and this provoked the idea for the iPhone app.  The developer said : “I thought that what I needed was a way of simplifying and summarising these web searches. Google has Instant Preview but that is just an image of the page. What I wanted was a  content preview .” Li Ka-Shing, of Horizons Ventures, is the Chinese billionaire who ranks as one of the wealthiest people in the world. He has invested $250,000 (£1...

Resolutions 2012 BoomBoom! There are almost as many apps for keeping track of New Year's resolutions

Resolutions 2012 There are almost as many apps for keeping track of New Year's resolutions as there are resolutions you've probably made in the past and broken within the first week. Resolutions 2012 though is as helpful a tool as an app can be in helping you stick to your goals this year. You start by putting in a few goals. Either type them in yourself or choose from the dozens of pre-programmed ones placed in five categories: Eating, exercising, mental wellness, economic wellness, and just a general be a better person slot. Once you pick your goals they're listed for you along with tips on how to change habits in order to meet those goals, daily charts for checking off when you've accomplished that goal for the day, and you can even set goals for yourself that offer rewards. Again there are lots of resolution keeper apps for all devices, Resolutions 2012 is an iOS app for 99-cents. BoomBoom! If one of your goals for 2012 is to just be nicer and help make the world a...

When Nintendo’s Wii U launches next year, it’ll have a “full-blown app store,” The Daily’s Matt Hickey reports, citing an unnamed source.

When Nintendo’s Wii U launches next year, it’ll have a “full-blown app store,” The Daily’s Matt Hickey reports, citing an unnamed source. Or will it? As Hickey notes, Nintendo already offers app repositories through the Wii Shop and DSi Shop. The difference with the Wii U is that it’ll offer a wider variety of apps, beyond games and basic utilities. But breadth of apps is not the best metric for a real app store, unless your definition is simply “a place to buy apps.” The way I see it, a true app store goes further by opening its doors to any developer. Whether there’s an approval process (a la iOS) or not (a la Android) doesn’t matter. What’s important is that anyone who knows how to code can contribute, so that the app selection grows in unexpected ways. You won’t find any great app stores that don’t allow this kind of outside development. From Hickey’s report, I can’t tell whether Nintendo will open its app store to all developers, and I have my doubts. Game consoles are noto...

The opening of Apple's App Store marked a seminal moment of the smart-phone age

The opening of Apple's App Store marked a seminal moment of the smart-phone age, unleashing a wave of creativity and innovation that no single company could have ever thought up or pulled off. It spawned the development of hundreds of thousands of new uses for the devices, apps for consuming media, playing games, making music, navigating cities and much more. In turn, it compelled millions of additional customers to make a new piece of technology a central part of their lives. Elad Inbar hopes the same could be true for robots. Late last year, the industry veteran launched RobotsAppStore.com, a robotics software marketplace modeled on mobile app stores. He opened a San Francisco office in November, began hiring staff and is in the midst of raising funding. My first impression on hearing about a robot app store was: It's an idea ahead of its time. That was also my second and third impression. Outside of my tech industry contacts, I don't know a single person who owns...
