ISLAMABAD, Dec 8: Caretaker Prime Minister MohammadmianSoomro terming corruption "highly deplorable" for astate, termed good governance, transparency and rule of law as vitalingredients for checking corruption in a society.Addressing a ceremony to mark the 4th International Anti-Corruption Day organized by National Accountability (NAB) atNational Library here, the Prime Minister said besides effectivesystem of monitoring, there was a dire need to address the basicproblems of people leading to corruption.Soomro stressed the need for a more practical approach tocheck this menace by providing people a decent lifestyle to helpprevent them from involving in corruption.He said it was the government's utmost responsibility toprovide the people a better life including adequate salaries, andother facilities relating to health, education, transport andsecurity.He said the real challenge in curtailing corruption was tocreate awareness among the masses to avoid committing such crimes.He said whether monetary or moral, the corruption wasdeplorable in every mode.He emphasized on creating a comprehensive system withintegrated monitoring, evaluation and quality processing to keep avigil on the spread of corruption.The Prime Minister mentioned the role of women in capacity-building that could inculcate in new generation the spirit to fightagainst corruption.Chairman NAB Mr.Nawid Ahsan in his welcome address saidcorruption makes the society pay in a detrimental way, and requiresa strategy based on awareness, prevention and enforcement.He said each segment of the society must supplement thegovernment's anti-corruption efforts particularly the civil society,legislature, judiciary and media.He termed dedication, integrity and fairness as the guidingprinciples for any law-enforcing personnel in fight againstcorruption.Later, the Prime Minister gave away awards to the winners ofthe poster competition organized to mark International CorruptionDay.With an objective to creating corruption free society, the NABhas prosecuted 1282 cases, decided 702 cases, convicted 476 andacquitted 129 till October this year, while 580 cases are inprogress. Investigation is underway against 2021 government servants,584businessmen, 205 politicians, 28 armed forces men and 772 others. The NAB recovered a total of Rs 206.8 billion including Rs 116billion from bank defaulters, Rs 8.9 bln as voluntary return andplea bargain, Rs 9.2 bln as indirect recoveries, Rs 60.4 bln asrescheduling of loan and court fines as Rs 11.5 bln.
